The Strath Haven varsity boys’ lacrosse team suffered a tough 14-2 loss to the rival Ridley Green Raiders on Thursday, April 23, despite a competitive first half and a strong defensive effort early in the game. The Panthers trailed just 6-1 at halftime before Ridley pulled away in the second half.
The game, held on Haven’s George L. King field, was also “Hope for Hallie Night,” with players wearing purple jerseys to raise awareness for mental health. The jerseys added meaning behind the night and fueled the team’s energy early on.
“Our main thing is controlling the controllable — energy, attitude, toughness,” head coach Drew Goff said. “I think we really did that, especially in the first half.”
Senior defenseman Quinn Fromal echoed that sentiment, highlighting the team’s physical play early in the game.
“We were looking for a dogfight, and that’s what we got,” Fromal said. “We came out there and scrapped with those boys.”
Defensively, the Panthers showed promise, holding Ridley to six goals in the first half. The team credited aggressive play and strong communication as key factors in slowing down the Green Raiders’ high-powered offense.
“We brought the energy. We brought the grit,” senior defenseman Oliver Gwinn said. “We held them to six goals in the first half, which was a good job [done] by us.”
However, Haven struggled offensively, with missed scoring opportunities proving costly. Goff pointed out that while the team generated good looks, execution fell short.
“We’re getting good shots,” he said. “[We] just got to get them on net.”
Moving forward, the Panthers remain optimistic about the remainder of their season. With several winnable games approaching, the team hopes to build momentum and make a push for the playoffs — a feat they have not accomplished in five years.
“We’re going to make a statement,” Fromal said.
